The form of government is a constitutional monarchy established on democratic parliamentary principles. The head of state is the reigning Prince von und zu Liechtenstein, Hans-Adam II. Since 15th August 2004 his son, Crown Prince Alois, handles the government business.
Furthermore, the Principality of Liechtenstein has been a member of the Council of Europe since 1978, a member of the UN since 1990 and a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) since 1995.

The new Tax Act came into force in January 2011 (Act of 23 September 2010 concerning National and Municipal Taxes – “Gesetz vom 23. September über die Landes- und Gemeindesteuern”).
This gave the Principality of Liechtenstein simple, internationally compatible tax laws which are compliant with European law.
Legal Entities
Liechtenstein company law, codified in the Law on Persons and Companies, dates from 1926 and was amended several times.
The Law on Persons and Companies makes provisions for a wide variety of company forms. However, the most important of these with respect to the role of the Principality of Liechtenstein as an international financial centre are the foundation, the establishment and the stock corporation.
Moreover, the Principality of Liechtenstein is the only continental European country to have included the common law trust in its legal system. Another form is the registered trust company, which is essentially modelled on the establishment.
